Reflection
What did you like about this project?
I really enjoyed the power point creation process. I love making power points and it seems like every time I make one I go a little over board with making it look nice - which is not necessarily a bad thing. I am really glad that I got the opportunity to research an aspect of Guatemalan culture I really enjoy, that being food, music and the market place. It really made me what to experience the market place for myself and see all the colors of the culture.
What were some of the most interesting discoveries you made while working on this project?
I think my most interesting discovery while researching this topic would be the sheer amount of fruits that Guatemala has. In American, the Untied States, we see a lot of different kinds of fruit but exotics fruits are a bit of a rarity in our supermarkets. It is very interesting to me to see the types of fruit we consider as exotic they see as an everyday type of food.
What would you like to learn more about?
I would defiantly like to look deeper into the meanings behind the traditional dances of the country. While putting together my power point, I found the seven traditional dances that are performed in Guatemala, yet I didn't have the chance to see the meaning behind each. Every dance has a different story to it and is performed as such. I have attended two Southern Ute dances and both really inspired me culturally and I got the same feeling when watching videos of the Guatemalan dances.
What would you suggest to do differently next time?
I think that we should get some more class time to work on our research and power points. We were given an amount of time to do this, yet I still found myself stressed at the end and rushing my project. I feel as if we had more time to work on it and more than just one day for peer critique, my project and presentation would have been better.
What was the most difficult part?
The most difficult part of this project for me was my pronunciation of the language. I know this does not have too much to do with the actual research and power point; but I became increasing nervous when I had to present my project. I am really good at reading Spanish and I can understand the language when it is on paper, but I have a very hard time speaking the language and it became my biggest struggle while presenting it.
